Welcome to the Screen Alliance Wales January Newsletter!

We hope you all had a great Christmas and a wonderful start to the new year. Last year, saw us reaching a record number of people through our outreach and we hope to continue our work and smash even more records this year!

Firstly, if you haven’t done so already, we would like to encourage you to create a profile on our website (here). This is an incredible place to showcase any credits, skills and links to previous work. It also keeps you up to date with all vacancies that we advertise and automatically signs you up to our newsletter. If you already have an account on our directory, do make sure to keep all your details updated with you most up to date information.

As always, we would like to start off by highlighting all the opportunities that are currently available over on our vacancies page. This is regularly updated, so make sure to keep checking the page on our website here. Now is such a great time to explore the varied roles that are on offer to join the booming Film and TV industry in Wales.

Highlights from 'SAW Achievement Awards'

In December, we hosted the very first Screen Alliance Wales achievement awards.

It was a night of laughter and celebration for all the incredibly hard work we, and all our friends and supporters have achieved over the last 5 years.

It was a night to remember, and we are happy to release a highlights reel of the evening with you.

The piece was created by Luna Tides Productions as well as footage from the brilliant USW Students.

University of South Wales:

University of South Wales ‘Nursing and Midwifery Mock Interviews’ were nominated Best Practice Access, Outreach and Student Recruitment at the HELOA Awards 2024. Congratulations to everyone who was involved!

4WOOD:

Set construction specialist 4Wood has announced their partnership with the British Film Designers Guild (BFDG) Awards. 4Wood are sponsoring the Best Production Design, Feature Film, Contemporary category.  The event, which celebrates outstanding set design, will take place on the 24th of February in London. 

The final list of nominees was announced in January. In contention for the production design Feature Film, Contemporary award are: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3Saltburn and The Kitchen

James Thorne, Creative Director, 4Wood said: "We are very proud to support the BFDG and sponsor the Feature Film - Contemporary category at this year's awards. What a fantastic shortlist of nominees, best of luck to everyone”

4WOOD Announce Partnership with the British Film Designers Guild (BFDG) Awards.

Gorilla:

Gorilla are proud to announce that we are finalists in the BEST POST HOUSE category at the BROADCAST AWARDS 2024, Grosvenor House London on February 8th.

BAFTA Cymru

Entries for the BAFTA Cymru Awards 2024 will open on Monday 4 March. The awards celebrate excellence in film and television across craft and performance categories. Did you know you can self-nominate? Here are the key dates for your diaries: Monday 4 March: Entry Site Opens (9.00 GMT) Friday 12 April: Submission and Payment Deadline (17.00 GMT) Rules and Guidelines for 2024 will be made available in due course. Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn

On Wednesday 10th January Pen-y-Bryn launched their latest Film Skills project - Doctor Who:Timewarp. The project sees the latest episode of the school's ongoing Doctor Who themed projects (this film being the fifth episode). The Key Stage 5 learners have worked hard throughout the Autumn Term, acting, creating props and special effects for the special project. The school were fortunate enough to launch the latest project at the Odeon Cinema Swansea to a packed audience of pupils, parents, and friends. The completed film (which features the teaming up of our three Pen-y-Bryn Doctor's in now available to see for free on our Film Skills YouTube channel by clicking the link:

Allison and Sarah take Bergen!

Allison and Sarah were kindly invited to Bergen, Norway by the Bergen Chamber of Commerce to share their insights about the Welsh Creative industries, in particular Cardiff as it twins with Bergen.

Allison shared her insights into the success of the Welsh creative industries and joined a panel with Meghan from Bergen Chamber and Maria and Siv from MerFilm.

Sarah was invited to give a workshop, and a better insight into what we do here at SAW.

They both had a brilliant trip, and want to extend their gratitude to Espen, Ragnhild and Meghan from Bergen Chamber, and to Maria and Siv from MerFilms for their hospitality. We can’t wait to see you again, and hopefully show you around our home in Cardiff.

Finalists for the UK Dev Awards 2024

Great news this month, as the Screen Alliance Wales platform has been nominated at the Dev Awards for ‘Third Sector Website of the Year’.

A big thank you to Rant Agency for their support with the creation of our platform.

We look forward to hearing the results on 21st February.

Business News Wales article

This month, Business News Wales wrote an article around Careers Wales being awarded the ‘National Educational Organisation Award’ at the Screen Alliance Wales Awards back in December.

Careers Wales were awarded this award for all their hard work, and their continuous support of our team over the past 5 years. It’s a pleasure to work with such an amazing organisation and we can’t wait to continue our work together.
