Our Very Own North Star

At Screen Alliance Wales, we are so proud of Production Designer extraordinaire, James North, who is not only an integral part of our Education Project but has now been nominated for a BAFTA Cymru for his fantastic work on Sky’s most successful home grown drama of all time, `A Discovery of Witches’.

Since graduating from Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, James’ career has gone from strength to strength.  He started out as an Art Department Assistant when `Doctor Who’ returned to the screen in 2005 and honed his craft on productions such as `Da Vinci’s Demons’ and `The Bastard Executioner’ before becoming a Production Designer in his own right on the BAFTA Cymru nominated `A Discovery of Witches’.  He was also Supervising Art Director on the BBC and HBO’s upcoming production of `His Dark Materials’, due to hit our screens next month.

As a Production Designer, James faces daily challenges including managing teams of varying sizes to dealing with locations both in the UK and abroad to meet those ever-demanding industry deadlines.

Fans of ‘A Discovery of Witches’ will be familiar with James’ incredible sets and his ability to recreate iconic locations such as Oxford’s Bodleian Library and bringing the streets of Venice to an unassuming TV studio in Cardiff. Recently, on social media, we’ve been lucky enough to have a sneak peak of a perfect reimagining of an Elizabethan street scene and we can’t wait to see this in more detail when Series 2 of ‘A Discovery of Witches’ returns to our TV screens next year.

Being a strong and creative leader is essential to his role and luckily, it’s a trait that James naturally possesses and carries out with great ease. With a traditional art school education behind him, and a wealth of knowledge and skills gained throughout his already extensive and impressive career, we think James thoroughly deserves his BAFTA Cymru nomination.

All of us at Screen Alliance Wales would like to thank James for all his help and support with our work here and wish him all the best for the big night. Good luck, James!
