From Work Experience To Work

Nikhil Theva Raj moved from Malaysia to Cardiff to study Performance and Media BA and Film Producing MA at University of South Wales and he first joined us for two weeks unpaid work experience in the Production Office of `A Discovery of Witches’ last year. After shining in those two short weeks, Nikhil then became a Screen Alliance Wales trainee working on reception at Wolf Studios, Wales. However, he didn’t stay long in this position and was soon snapped up by another Bad Wolf production. Nikhil is now a fully fledged Production Runner.
Nikhil’s advice to any future work experience placements is that despite what some people think, “it’s not all about being confident.” Nikhil believes it is, in fact, all about “politeness and being helpful and friendly.” If you are working in the Film and TV Industry then you are “working in a people business and that’s really what matters.” He also suggests that “work experience is what you make it and you shouldn’t expect to come in and be the 1st AD.” As Nikhil says, “there is no room for ego.” In the future, he is aiming towards becoming a Producer himself but he recognises the need to work his way up and he is certainly already doing that!
