From Apprentice to Best Boy

Ben began his career in the Film and TV industry at a very early age. He left school at 16 and was lucky enough to (according to Ben) to “fall into” an apprenticeship as an electrician working for Michael Samuelson Lighting Wales. Ben then left his native Cardiff to complete his apprenticeship at Pinewood Studios, London. However, after two years working in London, he returned home to Wales and has not stopped working since. After 11 years working on Dr Who, amongst other Welsh based productions, Ben progressed to becoming a Best Boy, second in seniority in the lighting department.
Ben had the unique opportunity of learning on the job and would highly recommend this route to others. He loves the fact that, in his job, “every day is different” but, as a Best Boy, he has to be prepared to “shoulder of a lot of responsibility.” His advice to those entering the industry is to “be prepared to work hard and put the hours in” and Ben is testament to the fact that his hard work really has paid off!
